Big thank you to The Meeple Mechanic for hosting a design interview with Brent Critchfield, Design Director on Gruff! "Gruff is designed as a hobby game, rather than a more session-based experience. In that space, replayability is extremely crucial. It is actually so crucial that I don't think of the problem in terms of how can I make my game more replayable, and instead think of it in terms of creative depth. I am trying to create a system that a player will be able to search for solutions to the problem "How do I defeat the enemy shepherd" and can find a wide variety of answers based on his/her play style and preference. The short answer is that you design a lot more game than a player will be able to experience in just a couple dozen plays." Keep up with the campaign! |
